HEALTHYouth: Empowering Youth to Cook. Grow. Thrive.

Farm to Neighborhood aims to build a truly sustainable culture of healthy eating habits in Athens that will last for generations. Instilling lifelong knowledge of healthy foods and cuisine and establishing healthy habits begins with engaging young people. Farm To Neighborhood is building upon its demonstrated successes in increasing access to fresh food by developing a HEALTHYouth Resource Center with a hands-on culinary and entrepreneurship learning environment. We will offer a nine-week hands-on HEALTHYouth program. We own the site and facility for the HEALTHYouth Resource Center and are engaged in fund-raising efforts, confident that our many partners will be eager to support the Center.

Impact

The HEALTHYouth program will teach elementary and middle-school youth hands-on basic healthy cooking concepts and techniques, expose them to various types of cuisine, show them how to connect food and money through healthy meal planning and budgeting, foster entrepreneurial thinking by connecting them with local chefs and culinary entrepreneurs, and mentor them in developing a basic business plan and budget. Participants will learn about other programs/opportunities to continue building their skills and knowledge, such as CCSD ag science and business education courses, the Athens Career Academy hospitality pathway, the Athens Technical College culinary program, Bread for Life, and the Classic Center Hospitality Careers Academy.

1000 Meals Food Drive

As one of Farm to Neighborhood’s most cherished services, the 1000 Meals Food Drive details donations of hot meals and fresh produce bags to any who need it – with no requirements or paperwork. In 2022, Farm to Neighborhood successfully donated over 5,000 pounds of fresh produce to families in need and hosted the 1000 Meals Food Drive three times. This year, we have four planned days of 1000 Meals: February 5, May 7, August 6, and October 1st. On these days, Farm to Neighborhood sets up two locations: one at 585 Vine Street, central to East Athens neighborhoods, and another at Hendershot’s Coffee in downtown Athens from 9am until noon, or until the food runs out!

The last 1000 Meals event included a choice of jerk chicken and rice or meatballs and rice from Rashe’s cuisine, or vegetarian chili from Hendershot’s. We also provided produce bags with apples, oranges, squash, zucchini, bananas, pears, tomatoes, and lettuce to those in need – just walk up and ask!

Mobile Farmer’s Market

Farm to Neighborhood has a vision of utilizing a refrigerated mobile storage unit to provide a Mobile Farmer’s Market. Stocked to the brim with fresh fruits and veggies harvested by local Athens farmers, this farmer’s market on wheels can counteract low food access by bringing healthy food right into your community! We hope this will help more individuals and families have access to nutritious, fresh produce in this town which struggles with food insecurity (for more info, read Athens: The War on Food Insecurity under the Community Corner section). This is a project currently in motion … stay tuned for updates as the Mobile Farmer’s Market comes to life!

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
